Paediatric First Aid in Northern Ireland: A Guide for Parents, Childminders & Early-Years Staff

When a child is choking, having a febrile seizure or has had a bad fall, the first few minutes matter more than almost anything else — and children aren't simply small adults, so the right response is different too. A paediatric first aid course in Northern Ireland gives parents, childminders and early-years staff the specific skills and confidence to act in those moments. This guide explains what these courses cover, the difference between the one-day and two-day options, and who needs which.

Why paediatric first aid is different

Children's bodies respond differently to illness and injury than adults'. CPR technique, choking management and the warning signs of a deteriorating child all differ by age — what's right for an adult can be wrong, or even harmful, for an infant. Paediatric first aid training is built entirely around babies and children, so the skills you learn map directly onto the emergencies you're most likely to face when caring for them.

What does a paediatric first aid course cover?

While content varies between the shorter and longer courses, a paediatric first aid course typically covers:

  • Assessing an incident and managing an unresponsive baby or child
  • Infant and child CPR, and safe use of an AED on a child
  • Choking in babies and children
  • Controlling bleeding, treating shock, burns, bumps, breaks and head injuries
  • Recognising and responding to seizures, including febrile convulsions
  • Common childhood conditions and emergencies — from allergic reactions and asthma to meningitis awareness

One-day or two-day: which paediatric course do you need?

There are two main options, and the right one depends on why you need the qualification.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid (1 day) Paediatric First Aid (2 day)
Length 1 day 2 days
Best for Parents, grandparents, babysitters, sports coaches, and settings where the shorter award is accepted Childminders and nursery/early-years staff who need the fuller qualification for registration
Depth Core paediatric emergencies Wider range of conditions and illnesses, in more depth
Validity 3 years 3 years

If you're caring for children professionally, the two-day Paediatric First Aid course is the fuller qualification most childcare settings look for. If you want the essentials — as a parent, grandparent or coach — the one-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course covers the core skills.

Do childminders and nurseries in NI need paediatric first aid?

If you provide childminding or day care in Northern Ireland, you'll be registered with your local Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust and must meet the relevant minimum standards — and appropriate first-aid training for the children in your care is part of that. In practice, that means paediatric first aid training is widely required or expected across registered childcare.

The exact certificate a setting needs can vary, so always check the current requirement with your HSC Trust, your employer or your registering body before you book. Many sports clubs, schools and activity providers also specify paediatric first aid for staff and volunteers who work with children. (This article is general guidance, not a statement of your specific regulatory obligations.)

Who else should consider paediatric first aid?

You don't need to work in childcare to benefit. We regularly train:

  • Parents and grandparents who want the confidence to handle an emergency at home
  • Babysitters and nannies
  • Sports coaches and activity leaders working with young people
  • School and after-school club staff

And if you're a parent who'd like your children to learn age-appropriate first aid too, our ProMediKids Mini Medics sessions teach first-aid basics to 7–11 year-olds.

Need workplace first aid as well? Combine and save a day

If you need both workplace and paediatric cover — common for staff in schools, clubs and mixed settings — our combined Emergency First Aid at Work and Emergency Paediatric First Aid course covers both qualifications in a single day. It's the most efficient way to tick both boxes at once.

Why train with ProParamedics

Our paediatric courses are delivered by active frontline ambulance personnel — clinicians who treat real patients, including children, and bring that experience into the classroom. That's what turns theory into genuine confidence.

The courses are accredited by Qualsafe Awards, meet HSENI standards, and are nationally recognised. We teach them at our purpose-built training centre near Belfast, with realistic scenarios and infant and child manikins, and we can also deliver group training on-site for nurseries, schools and clubs.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the 1-day and 2-day paediatric first aid course?

The one-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course covers the core paediatric emergencies and suits parents, grandparents, babysitters and coaches. The two-day Paediatric First Aid course covers a wider range of conditions in more depth and is the fuller qualification most registered childcare settings look for. Both are valid for three years.

Do childminders in Northern Ireland need paediatric first aid?

Childminders and day-care providers in Northern Ireland register with their local HSC Trust and must meet minimum standards that include appropriate first-aid training for the children in their care. Paediatric first aid is widely required or expected — check the exact certificate needed with your HSC Trust or employer before booking.

How long is a paediatric first aid certificate valid?

Both the one-day and two-day paediatric first aid certificates are valid for three years. You'll need to requalify before expiry to keep the qualification current.

Can parents do a paediatric first aid course?

Absolutely. Many of our learners are parents and grandparents who simply want the confidence to handle an emergency involving a baby or child. The one-day course is a popular choice for this.

Do you provide a certificate on the day?

Yes. On successful completion you'll receive your certificate, with a digital copy emailed for your records.

Can you deliver paediatric first aid training at our nursery or club?

Yes. We offer group bookings and on-site delivery across Northern Ireland for nurseries, schools, sports clubs and other settings. Contact our training team for a quote.
