What is the difference between FREC 3 and FREC 4?

FREC 3 is the Level 3 entry-point qualification for pre-hospital and event care, suitable for beginners. FREC 4 is the Level 4 qualification that builds on it, covering more advanced assessment and clinical skills for those working in more autonomous or senior roles. FREC 4 normally requires a valid FREC 3 first.

Do I need FREC 3 before I can do FREC 4?

In most cases, yes. FREC 4 assumes the knowledge and skills taught at Level 3, so you'll usually need a valid FREC 3 — or a recognised equivalent such as FPOS-I — before enrolling. If you're starting from scratch, begin with FREC 3.

How long does a FREC 3 qualification last?

A FREC 3 certificate is valid for three years. Annual refresher training of CPR and AED skills is recommended, and you'll need to complete a requalification course before the certificate expires to keep your qualification current.

Is FREC 3 enough to work as an event medic?

For many first-responder and event-medic roles, FREC 3 is the qualification employers ask for. More senior or higher-risk event medical positions may require FREC 4. If you're unsure what a specific role needs, check the job requirements or ask our training team.

How long is each FREC course?

How long is an Emergency First Aid at Work course?

What's the difference between EFAW and First Aid at Work (FAW)?

EFAW is a one-day course covering core emergency first-aid skills, suited to lower-risk workplaces. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a three-day course covering a wider range of injuries and illnesses in more depth, suited to higher-risk workplaces. Your first-aid needs assessment will indicate which your business requires.

Is my business legally required to have a first aider?

Yes. Health and safety first-aid law in Northern Ireland requires every employer to provide adequate and appropriate first-aid provision. What's adequate and appropriate is determined by a first-aid needs assessment rather than a fixed legal ratio.

How many first aiders does my workplace need?

There's no one-size-fits-all number. It depends on your hazards, employee numbers, accident history, and how your workforce is spread across sites and shifts. As a guide, a low-hazard workplace with fewer than 25 employees should consider at least one EFAW-trained first aider, with more as risk and headcount rise. Carry out a needs assessment and check HSENI guidance for your situation.

Do childminders in Northern Ireland need paediatric first aid?

Childminders and day-care providers in Northern Ireland register with their local HSC Trust and must meet minimum standards that include appropriate first-aid training for the children in their care. Paediatric first aid is widely required or expected — check the exact certificate needed with your HSC Trust or employer before booking.

What does a mental health first aider do?

A mental health first aider is trained to recognise the early signs that someone may be struggling with their mental health, offer initial support and a non-judgemental conversation, and signpost them towards appropriate professional help. They provide a first response and a bridge to support — they don't diagnose or treat.

Is Mental Health First Aid a clinical qualification?

No. Mental Health First Aid training does not make you a therapist, counsellor or clinician, and it doesn't qualify you to treat mental illness. It gives you the skills to spot the signs, offer support and signpost to professional help.

What's the difference between the Level 2 and Level 3 course?

The Level 2 award suits any employee becoming a workplace mental health first aider, focusing on recognition and initial support. The Level 3 award goes deeper and is aimed at managers, supervisors and those leading workplace mental health and supporting others.

Who is responsible for medical cover at an event?

The event organiser holds the duty of care and is responsible for ensuring adequate medical and first-aid provision is in place. Licensing authorities and Safety Advisory Groups will often require a credible medical plan as part of approving an event.

How is the level of event medical cover decided?

It's decided through a medical risk assessment rather than a fixed ratio. Factors include audience numbers, the type and profile of the event, the audience's age and needs, alcohol, duration, weather, site access and event history. The Purple Guide sets out this risk-based approach.

What is the Purple Guide?

The Purple Guide to Health, Safety and Welfare at Music and Other Events is the industry guidance published by the Events Industry Forum. It's the recognised successor to the former Event Safety Guide and is widely used to plan event safety, including medical and first-aid provision.

Is there a simple one medic per X people rule?

No. Crowd size alone is a poor predictor of medical need, which is why a risk-based assessment is used instead. Two events with the same headcount can require very different levels of cover depending on their risk profile.

Can I just rely on the NHS and 999 for my event?

No. Relying on the public ambulance service to cover your event is not a medical plan and can divert resources from the wider community. Organisers are expected to provide appropriate medical cover for their event.

How far in advance should I book event medical cover?

As early as possible. Good providers get booked up, and early planning allows time for a proper medical risk assessment and a plan that will satisfy your licensing authority or Safety Advisory Group.

What is an off-road ambulance?

An off-road ambulance is a purpose-built 4x4 medical vehicle crewed by clinicians, able to deliver the same standard of pre-hospital care as a road ambulance while reaching casualties across difficult terrain such as forest tracks, hills, fields and beaches. It brings treatment to the patient and allows for safe extraction.

What kinds of events need off-road or remote medical cover?

Any event taking place wholly or partly off hard, accessible ground — including rallies and motorsport, mountain and trail events, agricultural and country shows, remote festivals, and equestrian or adventure events.

Why isn't relying on 999 enough for a remote event?

A 999 ambulance has to travel to your site and then faces the same access challenge as any vehicle — it may not be able to reach a casualty on rough or remote ground. Relying on it also isn't an acceptable medical plan for an event. On-site, off-road-capable cover means clinicians can reach any point of your event quickly.

Does an off-road unit provide the same level of care as a normal ambulance?
